The Adtech AX/4000 is the easiest to configure and use of all the analyzers we tested. Most perceive the AX/4000 to be carrier- or service-provider oriented, and its chassis are the most expensive of those we looked at, but it's worth the price.
Adtech provided us with two chassis to evaluate: four-slot and 16-slot units. Because Adtech slots work in pairs, one as the generator/analyzer and the other as the physical interface, they can accommodate two or eight individual test pairs. The other three vendors build the generator/analyzer into the chassis or include it with the interface module. By separating the generator/analyzer module from the interface, Adtech lets you purchase interfaces without incurring the expense of the generator/analyzer. Adtech builds several generator/analyzers for different line rates. Each can handle any interface module up to its line rate. Generator/analyzers are available in four capacities: 155 Mbps, 1 Gbps, 2 Gbps and 10 Gbps.
Adtech is the only vendor here to support multiple OSes. The AX/4000 can be accessed from a Windows-based computer or a system running Sun Microsystems Solaris. This makes integration into facilities that prefer Unix or that run mixed environments easier. Our one complaint with the software is the backward compatibility with its GBIP beginnings. This required us to start a separate application to create the communication link with the AX/4000 over the Ethernet port before using the actual controlling software.
The controlling software shows all the generator/analyzers loaded in a chassis, along with the interface attached to them. Adtech's interface is flow-oriented, making the setup and configuration of the unit a breeze. Each option is clearly marked; users step through the setup process by simply following the arrows. As options are set in the flowchart, a green line indicates they were configured. We liked that from one screen we could see what was set and how data would be generated and then transmitted. Data capture requires a separate function.
On the generation side, we could create up to eight individual traffic flows. Distribution is handled equally or by one of three round-robin priority methods. Adtech also offers a traffic wizard that walks a user through creating traffic for generation. We could set and operate triggers and error injectors with no sweat. Current and past line alarms are available for each of the interfaces; they provide more information than most users will need.
Full analysis is also available on the AX/4000; it takes as little effort to configure as the generator. Unless we placed the interface in pass-through mode, the receive side was sent to the analyzer while the generator was connected to the transmit. We had no trouble configuring filters to capture only specific traffic and then send it through to the decoder. Because the generation and analyzing capabilities are not tied together, generator/analyzers could be mixed to generate on one interface and analyze the traffic coming back on an interface connected to a second unit.
