1958 john deere 720 diesel tractor. great to restore
Looking for a good home for a 1958 John Deere Model 720 Diesel tractor with fully working 4 cylinder pony motor. Appears to have been taken pretty good care of over the years, but needs some sheet metal, paint and decals.
My father in-law purchased this tractor about two years ago and has worked on getting everything mechanical / electrical in working order. He originally planned on restoring this one, but has other tractors he is working on and has decided to sell this one.
Everything works and runs as it should. The four-cylinder pony motor works and starts the diesel engine easily. The pony motor has electric start. I'm not sure if it was standard on the 720 series tractors, but this one has power steering with the original narrow front. Power steering works and system holds fluid.
Engine is 2-cylinder, 376 cubic inch, 6.125" bore, 6.375" stroke. Weight of the tractor is approximately 6790 lbs.
Serial number of this tractor is7221408 making it a 1958 model, the last year this model was produced.
All gears of the 6-speed transmission work and it shifts well. The only thing we've noticed is that if you shift through neutral and pull up on the shift lever, it slips out of the shift fork. The top of the transmission has not been pulled off so he's not sure why the lever slips out of the forks.
The tachometer / speedometer indicates 4140 hours, but the cable that drives it is broke, so he is unsure of the actual run hours.
All fluids and filters have been changed. Fuel system has been cleaned for the pony and diesel engine. All grease points take grease.
Live PTO has new clutch disks and is adjusted properly. Hand clutch / belt pulley drive works well. Brakes and all adjustments work correctly. All tires hold air, but are definately weather checked. Radiator is in good shape, no leaks and shows no signs of corrosion.
Live hydraulic system-PowerTrol works. Has hydraulic quick-connects on back and the lift arms for 3-pt.
Includes an IT Shop Manual JD-201.
All sheet metal is very solid with the exception of the seat pedestal. Pedestal has some rust holes. This tractor is in excellent shape for its age and it is a prime machine for a restoration project. The only thing that is a detriment to its condition is the square hole someone cut in the left side of the hood panel to more easily access the fuel pump and side of the pony motor. Several websites and tractor distributors offer replacement hoods and sheet metal sections for this tractor model-as well as stickers, panel meters, seats, etc.
