1895 Ammeter by Stanley Electrical Mfg. Co. Pittsfield, Mass. USA. Patented April 9, 1895. Ammeter for alternating or direct current. Dial has a scale of 0-25. Instrument is 8" in diameter. Excellent condition. Clean. No scratches or dents. Has a tag attached on the back that read "Physical Inventory The Edison Institute." The Edison Institute dba The Henry Ford Museum Dearborn, MI. Metal with glass over the dial. I believe the rim is brass. Heavy. Weighs over 9 lbs with packing.
Note: William Stanley was chief engineer in George Westinghouse's factory. In the late 1880's Stanley built the first practical AC device, a precursor to the modern transformer. He developed a system to allow the distribution of electricity over wide areas. His system brought light to stores and offices along the main street where he lived in Great Barrington, Mass. Stanley's transformer design became the basis of modern electrical power distribution. He was the first person to make an electrical transformer. In 1890 He founded Stanley Electrical Manufacturing Co. in Pittsfield, Mass. GE bought a controlling interest in his company in 1903. Stanley was granted 129 patents for a range of products and electrical devices.
