Laboratory magnetic stirrer, unknown make/model

We tested this stirrer, and it seems a bit quirky. Unit takes power with no trouble, but when we turned the rheostat up, it didn't actually begin to spin until we got it up to 90%. We sat a screw on the center of the stirrer, and when we hit 90%, the screw began spinning very fast. After only a couple seconds though, the screw slowed to barely a crawl. We turned the control knob up to 100%, but this didn't change the speed. After messing around with it for a couple minutes, we found that every time we would turn it away, and then back to approx. 90%, the screw would spin really fast for a second, then slow again. It should be noted, that while this stirrer looks quite large, the only part that is actually magnetic and spins, is the small, center piece, approximately 4 inches in diameter.
