The HP-3457A is an advanced technology, lab-quality multimeter with many sophisticated features, 6-1/2 digit LCD display, in a lightweight, compact housing. This very versatile instrument is at home on the workbench or in an automated testing environment using the built-in HP-IB interface. The HP-3457A will measure AC voltage and current, DC voltage and current, AC + DC volts and current, 2- and 4-wire ohms, frequency and period.
This outstanding meter is capable of 0.10-nanovolt resolution, with maximum voltage readings of 300V (AC or DC; max input level 450V). Ohms from 10 micro-ohms to 3.03 G-Ohm (3030-MOhms) can be measured. Current measurements can be as low as 100-pA to 1A maximum (fused at 1-1/2 Amps). Typical accuracy (on three-volt range) is 0.00035%, +5 counts over a 24-hour period at 23 C 1 C.

This is a remarkable meter in many ways. It is lightweight, very reliable, easy to use, doesn't require long warm up times, and is extremely accurate. The HP-3457A is an outstanding multimeter for the serious designer and electronics lab. One of the reasons that it is so accurate with minimal warm up time is that it generates very little heat in the first place. It has no fan (it's silent) and the cabinet is barely warm to the touch after it has been on for hours.
The cabinet was refinished with our tough, light-gray, industrial enamel finish (professionally applied). The original HP User Manual is supplied on CD (PDF Adobe Reader file); you can download a copy here.

Memory______________________________________________________
Reading Storage, Subprogram Storage, State Storage: All share 2208 bytes. Can be allocated to each of the three memory areas as needs require.
Reading read: Readings can be recalled through HP-IB interface or from front panel.
Memory size: Total memory size 2208 bytes. 1 byte per ASCII character stored plus 4 bytes per reading stored.
The HP-3457A is capable of post-processing measurements with up to thirteen Math functions. It is a 6-1/2 digit multimeter, however, using Extended Resolution it can resolve 7-1/2 digits through HP-IB interface commands.
Another powerful feature of this instrument is the built-in, user-accessible Auto-Calibration routines that maintain optimum accuracy through time and temperature changes; just press a couple of front-panel buttons to perform Auto-Calibration.
The HP-3457A has both front and rear terminal connections that can be used to measure 2- and 4-Wire Ohms, Voltage, Current, Frequency and perform Reference Measurements between two sources. Both Front and Rear terminals were calibrated. Front and rear input is easily selected from the front panel or through HP-IB. The HP-IB interface is located at the lower right of the rear panel.
This HP-3457A comes with new, quality, screwed-on rubber feet (no stick-ons!). They will last a lifetime and keep your multimeter firmly in place on your workbench.
A similar instrumentation setup was used to calibrate this HP-3457A. Our NIST-Traceable Calibration requires several hundred steps and more than 1000 data input and outputs. Needless to say, this can take several hours for a technician to complete and is susceptible to human error.
