Powerpac's track caddy is fast, flexible and knows no boundaries
Contrary to all rumours things are looking up. And at full force too. Simply press on the red safety release lever and turn the idle mixture screw. The RC500 track caddy by Kronberg-based Powerpac Baumaschinen GmbH helps is ideal for extremely steep pasture slopes - work that previously required great effort. The 215 kilogram caddy easily takes on any load and is not deterred by obstacles. The manufacturer (PowerPac, Tel. +49 (0) 6173/68558) markets its unusual track vehicle with the promise that gradients up to 40 per cent pose no problem even under maximum loads of 500 kilograms. For horse owners the agile track is therefore the ideal vehicle for working in mountainous areas, for example when removing dung from a steeply sloping paddock. The track caddy proved its mountain-climbing abilities in a practice run. The smaller RC350 caddy was tested with a payload of 350 kilograms, and the RC500 can fit 500 kilograms in its spacious, hydraulic tip skip.
A common feature of both devices is the caterpillar chain made from sturdy rubber-steel mesh, which gives the caddy the appearance of a small tank and allows it to move as such. Because the chain is approximately 80 centimetres long and 20 centimetres wide, the caddy can move more naturally over difficult terrain than a vehicle on tyres. This became clear when the caddy was initially tested on slippery, wet, sloping fields - both with an empty skip, and when the skip was filled with dung and straw. The performance of the small mountain climber was surprising: If the testers were initially sceptical as to whether the machinery could be accurately controlled, any doubt was eliminated after two minutes.
The caddy is steered via a combined function of a left and right safety release lever, and a left and right brake lever. To move to the right, first release the axle shaft using the red safety catch. Then pull the right brake lever lightly upwards - the caddy turns to the right. With a little practice, it's surprisingly easy to gauge precisely how to control the machine by pulling the brake lever. If the brake lever is fully activated on one side the corresponding chain is locked and the caddy turns on its own axle.
It has an extremely small turning radius due to its short length (1.64 metres in the case of the RC350 and RC500). This level of mobility is as practical in narrow stable lanes as it is in paddock fence corners, or when accessing the box at a right angle.
At an almost 50 degree steep sand-gravel slope the PowerPac caddy then turned into the predatory caterpillar, climbing effortlessly upwards with rotating tracks. The Honda 5.37 HP single cylinder four-stroke engine in the RC500 enables this high level of traction (RC350 - 4.36 HP). The motor is actuated by a strong tug on the reverse starter, similar to an outboard motor for a boat. The tank holds three litres of regular petrol, enough for just under four hours of continuous use.
PowerPac has equipped its caddy with a three-gear toothed drive system. This drive system facilitates both fast travel on even paths (maximum speed in 3rd gear is around 5.6 km/h), and effective uphill climbing (1st gear: 1.55 km/h). To change gears, simply disengage the coupling and shift into the required gear (see photo). This combination makes the caddy the ideal yard assistant: Longer stretches can quickly be covered and gradients effectively overcome. The caddy's climbing power not only enables it to conquer steeply sloping paddocks but also to move directly onto a dung hill or a trailer. The dung can therefore be loaded on top of a dung hill and not only at the side of the hill (even hydraulically, in the case of the RC500 ), or on a trailer. The caddy also overcomes stairs and steep edges effortlessly.
